Well, I think it was 5 miles...

We ran from Sugarhouse Park today.  We got grouped up into groups of 3-5 newcomers to 1 veteran runner.  I was grouped up with RJ, which was nice.  Unfourtunately, we were nearly the last people back.  I ran out of energy and had to walk a bit because I hadn't eaten anything in the past 12 hours.

But I think it was good for my 6th-ish run!  Thanks, RJ, for sticking with me!

And, wow, my left leg is pretty sore from that run!

Your legs are probably sore from yesterday too. Those hills were killer! I'm so excited for hill heck week! Good job though! Make sure you don't jump miles too quickly

Eat before coming to practice! Don't you listen to your coaches? Really though, you ran really well today! Keep up the hard work!

We did our workout at Sunnyside Park.

I had no idea where I was going on the first run...

I had to follow behind Tess in order to not get lost, the rest of the pack was too fast.

After that run, we did stride relays, 8 strides per person.

Then, we did some arm exercize, and ran a small lap.

For a cooldown, we ran the same small lap twice.

And today I actually ate food before the workout!  So I wasn't dying of hunger!

Good job dude! I got lost on the warmup too, don't worry :)

First, let me just say...

I HATE hills.

We ran 3 miles through a mountain trail that I didn't know.

Dylan was kind enough to stick with me until we reached the turnaround point.  I tried to run most of it, but I'm still so new, and those hills really wore me down.

After everyone got back, we did 3 sets of 1 minute step ups.

3 laps and about a third of one at Liberty Park

The first lap was just a warmup, the second was a fireman lap, the third and 1/3 was a cooldown.

The first lap was fine, along with the cooldown.  But the fireman only worked until about the halfway point.  After that, 3 of the 6 in my group couldn't keep up.  Then, Delaney ran a bit too fast for me and the other girl who were keeping up.  So it kind of turned into a normal lap about 3/4 of the way in.

I think I ate a bit too much before the run (Why can't I get the food right?), I was feeling nauseous at the end of the fireman and all through the cooldown.

But overall, it was a good run.

Although, I'm confused...  Are cooldowns really supposed to be longer than any other run that was done during the exercise?

Cool downs vary. They're mainly just to get the lactic acid out of your legs so you're not sore the next day, especially after races.

From Sally(Not Amy) on Fri, Jun 17, 2011 at 17:34:16 from 67.2.28.150

Sorry! I just wanted to finish the lap and be done because my lungs were really closing up on me. Good job today though!

Youth conference prevented me from running today.  We did a service project and then went to Cowabunga Bay.  Long story short, I look like a lobster (darn it, sun/sunscreen!).  Sleeping tonight is going to suck...

Total Distance
1.50

The sunburn I have is extremely painful right now, so I couldn't run with the team...

I tried to walk multiple laps around Sugarhouse Park while they were doing the workout, but I had to stay with my family, and they only did 1 lap...  I hope I can run tomorrow, or at least the day after...

Next time, I'm avoiding water parks....

Water parks are okay. It is the SUN:)You need to use some sunscreen. Keep up the good work.

Finally back from my sunburn...

Well, the first lap around sugarhouse park was okay, until my knees both started stiffening.

Then, we did a lot of stretches, my knees were still stiff, and it didn't help.

Then, we did a circuit workout thing, and the first part killed me, I had to slow on the jumping jacks because of the first one, but the squats and mountain bike excercizes weren't hard at all, minus slipping repeatedly.  My knees actually didn't bug me throughout this part.

I was exhausted by cooldown time, so I wasn't able to run as much of it as I would have liked.  My knees had restiffened, and I was starting to get a headache...

However, I feel fine now.

Total Distance

10 minute warmup run, then 3 minute runs (are those the ones called fartleks?) with 2 minute breaks inbetween.

Nothing really was bad today, except that my left side just at the hip started hurting in the warmup.  It stopped at the turnaround point.

Afterwards I did my core, and when the advanced came back, we all did 3 sets of stepups and arm swings.

Total Distance

Well, the scavenger hunt run was quite fun.

I was stuck into the girls group (grr...) so I was faster than most of them.  However, at least 4 of them could probably beat me easily.

I had no idea where I was going during any of this.

Ha ha. You did very well being patient with all the girls :)

From Travis on Thu, Jun 30, 2011 at 14:02:16 from 67.41.165.238

It wasn't bad at all, really. I actually enjoyed the run. It's just the normal "boys are better" view that some boys have. If I'm stuck in a girls group, I could be considered lesser by some morons. You know what I mean?

Total Distance
5.00

I really like that pipeline trail.  Even though it was practically all hills, I really enjoyed this run.  I ran the first bit with Delaney, but she started going fast and I lost her.  I ran for a little while longer until I ran back into her, Sam, Gavin, and Tess going back.  So I turned around with them, but I still eventually lost all of them.  I ran most of the way back, and then started almost falling asleep running.  I wasn't tired, I was just very unfocused.

All in all, this was an excellent run.

And I've also discovered my main problem with running currently.  Poor circulation runs in my family, so my heart beats really fast really early in the runs.  That makes it hard to slow down and recover without walking.

Total Distance
5.00

I found that I don't like Liberty Park...

The air is always smoggy, which screws up my breathing, which in turn screws up my circulation which, as I mentioned in my last entry, already sucks.

We did 1 lap, and I was able to run it all (finally!), then 2 800 runs, which I also ran completely.

My first time was 4:04

Second was 4:20

Then we did almost another lap for a cooldown.  I hate cooldowns.  I know they are important, but I hate them.  I'm already exhausted by cooldown time, yet Bill tries to still push the mileage using the cooldown.  I had to walk so much for that.

And now I've been assigned 3 30 second leg lifts each night because I have bad core.  Great...

Total Distance
4.50

A run from sunnyside apparently past Shriners hospital... Or something.

Seriously, I had no idea where I was going (that seems to be happening a lot...) but I kept up well enough to see where to go.  I made it to the drinking fountain, waited with my group for a bit, then we ran back.  I slowed down about half a mile down, because my sister was falling behind, and I didn't want her to get lost.  I stuck with her pace until the advanced group nearly ran into us.  Then I ran ahead and kept a good pace all the way back.

Then, after the advanced group came back(they took a longer run back around) we all did our core.

My feet felt a little sore during this run, but not hinderingly so.

As you do some of the routes a couple times it does get easier, for one because you are familiar with where you are going and you know what to expect. I want you to do double core workouts this whole week. With the team and again on your own at night. Your form is getting better and I feel it is because you are waking up muscles that have been sleeping.

Run at cottonwood complex.

1 warmup lap I ran completely.

8 strides across a soccer field.

4 hill workouts that I tried to run most of.

Then a regions lap that I ran very little of.

Bill, I have to run 7 miles, do double core, and do 3 30 second leg lifts?  Sheesh.

Pipeline trail.

I made it to the exact same point as last time, but I was faster this time!  Last time I caught up with a group coming back.  This time I lead a group going forwards.  Mostly, I ran with Maclean and his sister.  I'll be honest, I got a little lazy on the way back and walked a lot more than I needed to.  But I ran at least 3, maybe 4 of those miles!

Total Distance

1 Lap around Liberty warmup.

1 Lap Fireman.

1 and about 1/2 lap cooldown.

Then we did our core and some arm swings.

Slurpee run from Sunnyside park!

Both tasty and painful AND disgusting.

It was odd, after about the 3rd 7-11, I started recognising a lot of places we went to.

I stuck with Blake and Becca most of the way there, and was in every 7-11 with them.  They beat me at the final strech though.

After the 6th 7-11, I was nearly ready to puke.  It was rediculously hard to swallow the 7th slurpee.

We ended up at Liberty Park.  Most everyone else ran and/or walked back, but if I had, I certainly would have barfed.  I rode with my mom up there instead and did my core before they showed up.

Then, my sisters and I discovered that there was a free lunch at Sunnyside after, so we stayed for that.  Taylor is angry about it, for one reason or another...

Total Distance

Wheeler Farm run.

Warmup lap or so... I was with Blake and Becca and we got pretty lost.

Then fartlek, 1 min on, 1 off, for 20 minutes.  I ran that with Maclean.

Then strides relay.  I feel pretty good about it.  My elementary age sister even joined in for this!

Then cooldown.  I ran/walked with my sister because she wanted to try it.

Then core, of course.

Total Distance
3.00

Run from JCC on the "dry" creek trail... Which was flooded.

I got water in my shoes pretty early.  I followed Blake and Becca until we ran into Scott.  He was apparently in too much pain to run, so I stuck with him to the rock pile and back.

To be honest, we didn't run much at all.

And apparently, I'm a frog to Mike, whatever that means...

Total Distance
6.00

Run at Sugarhouse.

First warmup lap I was fine with and ran the whole way.

Then, we went and played 21 by running up a hill and going for 400s.  I thought it might be fun.  But it was so easy for the advanced runners that it was practically impossible for any of us newbies to win.  That was really demotivating.

I think we were supposed to run some sort of cooldown, but no one was running when I got to the meeting spot.

Total Distance
4.50

3 laps around Liberty park.

1st warmup.

2nd fartlek, of sorts... 20 seconds on, 40 off.

3rd cooldown.

Almost nobody was here because of girls camp and Harry Potter.  Was kind of odd.

Total Distance
5.00

Run from Sugar House Park.

Apparently, it was supposed to be 4.5 miles, but Alessandro and I were behind Sam and some other people, and they took a couple of wrong turns.

We eventually got back on the correct path, and we reasoned out that since we ran 3-6 blocks while off course, we could say we added half a mile.

I don't know where Sam's group went. We turned back onto Zenith, and they continued going south and west.

Well, it was a good run, besides the fact that I was slightly dehydrated and tired.

I don't exactly know how much it was, Mike seemed to say it was almost 6, Taylor says it was 4...

Well, we ran to the flagpole, then back a different route.

I walked quite sizeably on the way there, because my stomach started hurting. But I made it there and started walking back with Maclean. Mike ran into us and pushed us to run. I did, but Maclean only did for a little while.

That was probably the longest run I didn't walk for even 2 minutes worth of time in (total!). Thanks for showing me I could do it, Mike!

Total Distance

Man, I keep running 5 miles... Good practice for Monday, I guess...

2.5 mile warmup and 6 strides.

Then, a fartlek run around the regions course. Got most of the way through before the end.

Then, a final half mile to round out the numbers.

Total Distance
4.00

Run at Pipeline.

First half, I ran almost the whole way there just ahead of Maclean, until I ran into Delaney. She had to slow down for a bit because of her recovery from chlorine gas poisoning.

Second half, we ran into Scott and ran with him. He went ahead with Anders and Nelson, Delaney ended up somewhere behind us. Eventually, she passed us again.

However, then something happened, and Delaney had to stop completely. Scott told Maclean and I to keep running while he helped Delaney. We did... for about 10 seconds. Then we both decided to just wait for them.

They were up and moving again before long. We ran the rest of the way back after a short walking break.

Well, the first 3 miles were fine, I was just a bit tired.  Ran with Maclean until he started rushing ahead with Anders.  Ran into Alessandro, kept with him for a long while.

But somewhere after the halfway point, I started feeling sick to my stomach.  Ran as much as I could, but had to slow to prevent barfing or the like.  Alessandro got past me about 5 blocks out from the finish and I didn't see him again.

I feel like I could have done better if I just hadn't felt sick in the middle of it, but it was good for my first race (I think)!

Edit:

Wow, I was 2nd to last of my age group... thats a little discouraging...

Though, technically, I beat Alessandro (he lost his chip)!

Travis good job today. One step at a time, I continue to see improvements every week. Running is setting your own goals and going after them. "The first and best victor must conquer self."

Ran 2 laps warmup, talked for over an hour, then did 2 more laps for I don't know what purpose.  Advanced group ran somewhere else, I don't know exactly where, afterwards, to add on the last half mile.

Bill seemed extremely tired from the marathon.  I actually "beat" him.

Did some drills/drill relays (Duck walking is a lot more painful than it looks!).

Then ran 1 mile for cooldown.

Ow, I am sore.

I woke up today and my legs were sore just above the knee.

That trend continued throughout the entire run from JCC.

Bill caught up to me about halfway to 3, and kept pushing me to run faster, catch up with someone, etc.

I eventually caught the person he told me to, so 1 goal completed.

But that elevation certainly screwed up my breathing.

Way up, legs and chest hurt.

Way down, only legs hurt, and much less than way up.

Total Distance

Sorry everybody, I don't mean to miss practice (or the home workouts you assigned me, Bill)...

But after I woke up yesterday, I was just feeling sick.  That's continued into today, so I don't know how long it will be until I can run again.

But I'll try to do what I can this week, sick or not.

Beginning of Hill Week at Sugarhouse Park

1 grass lap, 5 hills (would have been 6, but Emily told me not to run the 5th, because I was exhausted.) then 2 miniature hills, and another grass lap to finish.

My legs were sore right around my knees.  Mostly just barely above them, on the back side of my legs.

I was nearly the last person back on the first lap, then I pulled ahead of everyone that is around my level for the hills (except Jeremy sprinted ahead of me at the very end).

Jeremy kept ahead of me for the mini hills and the final grass lap.  Alessandro was ahead of me until just before the end.  I caught up to him, and he apparently was in pain or something, so he walked the last few meters (under 10 meters, Bill, don't worry.)

Was fun, despite Taylor injuring himself and me getting my leg covered in mud.

Oh, and me getting sunburned arms and neck (not as bad as the last time I got burned!)

Don't know how many miles it was, and we didn't run it, so I cant really count it.

Ran the entirety of the first half with Alessandro, and even got him to run down hills better.

Then, for some reason, I started crashing, and just felt really really tired.  He went off ahead of me. (Ironically, this seems to happen a lot, dosen't it?)

But I wasn't last back!  I beat some of the people who didn't even run 8.5 miles!

Total Distance

Sugarhouse Park...

State course for warmup, 8 hill loops, and 5 circuits.

Then, Bill wanted us to run the state couse backwards for cooldown.  I didn't.

You know what I don't understand?

Why do we even need cooldowns?  Yeah, it's to get the acid out of your legs, or whatever it is, but doesn't it get out while you're running the workout anyways?  And if it dosen't, what changes to suddenly make running get the acid out of your legs?  Taking a break?  Because we did that during the workout, plural times!

Can anyone explain this to me?

Total Distance

1 Lap warmup, strides, 2 half miles and 1 mile sprints.  Then ran back to drinking fountain for cooldown.

Then, Bill made everyone some sort of breakfast.

Nice day despite being suddenly tired!

We showed up late (thought it was 7:30 that it started). We still ran the entire thing though.  Ran the first half alone, ran half of the way back with Ashley (well, technically speaking, walked), then ran the rest of the way back.
